September 28-October 2
Looking Back:
π A Busy Week in Grade 1! π
We had another busy week filled with learning, exploring, and celebrating our progress!
π Phonics & Reading
This week, we learned the letters and sounds H, O, and R. We also took an exciting next step in our reading journey by beginning to blend sounds together to read simple CVC words. Students practiced putting individual sounds together to read words such as hot, hop, and rot. We are learning that each sound we know helps us become stronger readers!
π’ Math
In math, we learned about tally marks and how they can be used to quickly record and count quantities. Students practiced making groups of five and using tallies to represent numbers.
π¦Έ Zero the Hero – Day 20!
Zero the Hero helped us celebrate Day 20! We talked about how two groups of ten make 20 and explored different ways to represent this number. Students played “Race to Twenty,” using a 20-frame and counters. They took turns adding counters to their frames and counting on as they raced toward 20. This was a fun way to practice counting, one-to-one correspondence, and recognizing how numbers can be composed.
π Science – Signs of Fall
We continued our exploration of fall in science. Students observed and discussed the changes happening around us, including changes in the weather, trees, plants, and animals. We are becoming careful observers of the world around us!
𧑠Social Studies – Truth and Reconciliation
As we learn about our community and our place within it, we spent time recognizing and discussing Truth and Reconciliation. Students were introduced to the importance of listening, learning, remembering, and showing respect. We also attended a special assembly hosted by the Grade 3 classes, who shared their learning with us.
It was a wonderful week of learning, growing, and building our classroom community! π
Looking Ahead:
π Fall Nature Collection! π
Next week, we will use items from nature to create fall-inspired art! If you are out enjoying the beautiful fall weather this weekend, please consider collecting a few small, dry leaves, twigs, pinecones, seeds, or other interesting natural items for your child to bring to school.
Please send only a small collection for an art project. We will be creating our art on Thursday next week. Please send them in by Wednesday. We can’t wait to see what treasures our young artists discover! πΏπ¨
π Library Reminder
A reminder that library day is every Tuesday. Please remember to return library books on Tuesday so students can choose a new book to bring home.
πΈ Picture Day Reminder!
Just a reminder that Picture Day is Wednesday, October 7! Please have your child ready for their school photos. We’re looking forward to capturing some special Grade 1 smiles! π
